Waterpower Hydro Basics is a 10-module course over a day and a half that provides information on all aspects of the industry for people who are new to hydropower and also provides a valuable overview for people wanting to broaden their knowledge of the industry. The course materials were developed by the Hydropower Training Institute and have been delivered for more than two decades. Development and delivery of the course is managed by a committee and aided by instructors who are experts on the subject being delivered. Topics covered at Waterpower Hydro Basics include: Hydraulic design Turbine basics Generator functions Power system fundamentals Facility operations and maintenance Fish passage and environmental management Regulatory issues Community and stakeholder engagement Other exciting educational and networking offerings taking place today include an in-the-field technical tour of two hydropower plants and two new hands-on training courses taking place at a Denver Water facility and the Western Area Power Administration’s Electric Power Training Center.
