Utility Denver Water, which owns and operates seven hydroelectric plants in the U.S. state of Colorado, is supporting HYDROVISION International 2024 as a host utility.

Denver Water was founded in 1918 and is the state’s largest and oldest water utility, with a service area of more than 335 square miles. A system of reservoirs networked by tunnels and canals provides water to 1.5 million people in Denver and surrounding suburbs. Money from the sale of the power produced by its seven hydroelectric plants is used to offset operating costs, typically saving ratepayers about $4 million per year. Most of these generators are located at existing water storage facilities, such as Gross Reservoir in Boulder County.

In April 2022, Denver Water began construction on the Gross Reservoir Expansion Project, which will nearly triple the capacity of Gross Reservoir. Named for the utility’s former chief engineer Dwight D. Gross, the dam will be raised by 131 feet. At 471 feet tall when complete, it will be the tallest dam in Colorado. Gross Dam supplies water to a 7.6 MW hydropower facility, and raising the dam will increase its generating capacity to 8.1 MW.

HYDROVISION International 2024 takes place July 16 to 18 in Denver. The event attracts attendees from about 50 countries and highlights perspectives on the role of hydropower, explores issues affecting hydro resources, and helps participants develop a vision to meet challenges and ensure the future sustainability of hydro.

The advisory committee will meet in November to determine the content to be presented in HYDROVISION International’s conference program. This robust program features panel presentation sessions and technical paper presentations. Additional sessions will take place in the Knowledge Hub in the exhibit hall and are open to all attendees.

The call for content — abstracts and speakers — for HYDROVISION International 2024, is currently open. There are two ways you can be a thought leader in the global industry. First, abstracts for technical papers will be accepted in eight broad categories: civil works and dam safety, energy storage, equipment and technology, market trends and asset strategies, new development, operations and maintenance, policies and regulations, and water and environment. Abstracts are due by Sept. 29, 2023.

Second, we have issued a call for speakers for the panel presentation sessions. Panel presentations will be made in the same categories mentioned above. Panel presentations are intended to be informal in nature, involving a moderator-driven panel discussion around a specific topic that also addresses questions from the audience. Speaker details must be received by Nov. 20, 2023, to be considered.
