Torino named executive technical director of Itaipu Binacional

Celso Villar Torino has been named executive technical director of Itaipu Binacional, the company that owns and operates the 14-GW Itaipu hydropower project on the Parana River between Brazil and Paraguay.

Celso Villar Torino has been named executive technical director of Itaipu Binacional, the company that owns and operates the 14-GW Itaipu hydropower project on the Parana River between Brazil and Paraguay.

Previously, Torino was superintendent of operations for the Itaipu hydro plant for nine years. He has worked at Itaipu Binacional since 1989.

Torino has a degree in electrical engineering from the State University of Rio Janeiro, and he obtained an international executive MBA from the Fundacao Instituto de Administracao — University of Sao Paulo.

Itaipu is the world’s second largest hydropower plant, behind China Three Gorges in overall capacity. The plant has been operating since 1984 and is currently undergoing a 10-year modernization project that will involve replacing obsolete equipment with more advanced technologies and machinery. As a first step, the overhead cranes are being modernized.
