Work has begun to replace the main gates on Elkhart Dam, which impounds water for a 3.4-MW hydro facility.

The dam, on the Elkhart River, was completed in 1913. The gates are being replaced because they are more than 100 years old and approaching the end of their useful life, according to plant owner Indiana Michigan Power. I&M says there have been no problems with the gates.

I&M did not provide the name of the contractor hired nor the value of the contract in a press release.

I&M is an operating unit of American Electric Power. The company has 22.4 MW of hydro capacity from six plants in Indiana and Michigan.

AEP owns about 26,000 MW of generating capacity in the U.S. and has operations in Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
