The government of Quebec has appointed Michael Sabia as president and chief executive officer of Hydro-Quebec. He will take office on Aug. 1, 2023.

Sabia will also become a member of the board of directors of Hydro-Québec.

He has significant experience as a manager and administrator, in both the private and public sectors. He has held the position of Deputy Minister at the Department of Finance of  Canada since 2020. From 2009 to 2020, he held the position of president and CEO of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. In the past, he also held the positions of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canada Infrastructure Bank and President and Chief Executive Officer of Bell Canada Enterprises.

“Our government is committed to carrying out the energy transition so that Québec becomes a leader in the green economy. Hydro-Québec has a very important role to play in this transition to tomorrow’s economy. I am confident that Michael Sabia will be able, as he did during his time at the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, to put his experience and expertise to the benefit of our nation in order to build a greener and more prosperous Quebec,” said François Legault, Premier of Quebec.

“We live in a changing world that invites us to be open and evolve with it. I am very happy to join the great Hydro-Québec team in this context and I am convinced that, together, we will be able to act for the benefit of the people of Quebec. I thank the Board of Directors and the Government of Quebec for their trust. I undertake this mandate with humility and determination, knowing that I can count on competent and committed people,” Sabia said.

Hydro-Québec generates, transports and distributes electricity. It is Canada’s largest electricity producer and one of the largest hydroelectric producers in the world. Its sole shareholder is the Quebec government.
