European utility SSE is celebrating its long history with hydroelectric power through the publication of a new book, titled, “Power from the Glens”.

The book is a “poignant tribute to the engineers whose bravery helped build Scotland’s vast array of hydropower stations,” the company said in a statement, and combines historical imagery with storytelling.

The book’s publication coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Hydro-Electric Development Act of 1934, which opened the door for a number of hydropower projects in Scotland.

One such project — the 15-MW Pitlochry plant — is home to a visitor center where the book is being sold.

“Ironically, when Pitlochry Dam and Power Station was first given the go-ahead, there were fears it would lead to the ‘ruination of tourism’,” said SSE Finance Director Gregor Alexander. “So when we hear about record numbers of visitors to the Pitlochry Dam Visitor Centre and the appetite for this book, it brings a smile to my face.”

“Power from the Glens” is available for £14, and also available for order via an online portal here.

“It is a fitting and lasting tribute to those who built the dams and now future generations can come to our stunning visitor center and buy the book of our hydro story for themselves,” said Gillian O’Reilly, SSE Head of Heritage.
