Webuild signs memorandum for hydropower reconstruction in Ukraine

Webuild has signed a Memorandum of Collaboration in the Construction of Hydropower Facilities in Ukraine with Ukrhydroenergo, the main hydropower plant operator.

The memorandum states that the parties will collaborate during the next three years in the construction of new hydroelectric infrastructure in the country. The specific projects covered under the memorandum were not identified.

The memorandum is designed to facilitate an assessment of the feasibility of eventual development of hydroelectric plants or their conversion into pumping stations. Such projects would be defined under more specific agreements.

According to Webuild, signing of the memorandum was announced during the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference, organized in Rome by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and dedicated to discussing the participation and projects to contribute to rebuilding Ukraine.

According to World Bank and European Commission forecasts, the cost of rebuilding Ukraine and helping the country recover should be about €383 billion (US$422.4 billion) for investments to be made during the 2023 to 2033 period. They would be mainly earmarked for transport (22%), residential buildings (17%) and energy (11%).

Recently, Hydro Review reported that Ukrhydroenergo has lost more than 2 GW of generating capacity due to shelling by the Russians. Nataliya Mykolska, a member of the supervisory board of Ukrhydroenergo, estimated the company’s direct losses at approximately 1 billion dollars. After the attacks, Ukrhydroenergo has already restored 500 MW of capacity.

The utility is the largest hydropower generating company in Ukraine, with 100% of its shares belonging to the state. The company operates 10 power plants on the Dnipro and Dnister rivers, eight conventional hydro plants (Kyiv, Kaniv, Kremenchuk, Seredniodniprovska, Dnipro-1, Dnipro-2 HP, Kakhovka and Dnister) and two pumped storage plants (Kyiv and Dnister). In addition, the Kaniv pumped storage plant and Kakhovka-2 hydropower plant are being prepared for construction.

Webuild has constructed 313 dams and hydroelectric plants worldwide for a total installed capacity of 52,900 MW. Among its ongoing projects are the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia and the Rogun hydroelectric project in Tajikistan.
