Two companies with hydro ties in top 100 of Fortune’s Most Admired Companies

Fortune has released its list of the 500 World’s Most Admired Companies for 2020, and two companies with ties to the hydropower industry are in the top 100: AECOM and American Electric Power (AEP).

AECOM comes in No. 56 on the list, with Fortune saying that the engineering and construction company scored particularly high for innovation, people management, social responsibility, quality of management, quality of products/services and global competitiveness. AECOM says it has made this list for six consecutive years.

AECOM delivers professional services throughout the project lifecycle — from planning, design and engineering to consulting and construction management. The company partners with the public and private sectors to solve complex challenges and build legacies, on projects spanning transportation, buildings, water, governments, energy and the environment. The company is based in Los Angeles, Calif.

Some examples of its hydroelectric industry work include conducting feasibility studies for the Grand Inga project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Richard Dulin with AECOM is on the conference planning committee for the HYDROVISION International event.

American Electric Power (AEP) was No. 63 on the list, and Fortune said the electric and gas utility scored high for financial soundness, use of corporate assets, quality of management and long-term investment value.

AEP, based in Columbus, Ohio, is focused on building a smarter energy infrastructure and delivering new technologies and custom energy solutions. AEP is one of the nation’s largest electricity producers with about 31,000 MW of generating capacity, including about 5,200 MW of renewable energy. AEP’s family of companies includes AEP Ohio, AEP Texas, Appalachian Power, AEP Appalachian Power, Indiana Michigan Power, Kentucky Power, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, and Southwestern Electric Power Company. AEP also owns AEP Energy, AEP Energy Partners, AEP OnSite Partners and AEP Renewables.

AEP’s hydro assets include the 21.6-MW Byllesby plant, where the company recently installed a battery storage system to provide grid support.
