Hydro powers … on National Hydropower Day in the U.S.

Aug. 24 is National Hydropower Day in the U.S., and this year’s theme is Hydro Powers… .

Hydro powers … cleaner communities, local job creation, a reliable electricity grid and innovative energy solutions.

The National Hydropower Association established the day to recognize hydropower’s contributions to bolstering clean energy infrastructure and providing grid resiliency and reliability, for over 140 years.

“As an industry, we know that hydropower is the second largest renewable in the U.S., yet the public isn’t as aware of the value hydropower provides as a climate solution, a job creator, a cornerstone of clean energy grids and more,” NHA said.

To support the industry in amplifying this message, NHA developed a Communications Toolkit that includes sample social media posts and a hydropower messaging guide. And NHA is encouraging industry members to post to social media using #HydroDay and #HydroPowers.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, hydroelectricity accounted for about 6.2% of total U.S. utility-scale electricity generation and 28.7% of total utility-scale renewable electricity generation in 2022. Hydroelectric generation varies annually, and its share of total U.S. electricity generation generally decreased from the 1950s through 2020, mainly because of increases in electricity generation from other sources. Hydroelectricity’s percentage share of total annual U.S. electricity generation in 2001 through 2022 averaged about 6.7%.
