Hydro-Quebec permanently shuts down production at 15-MW Saint-Narcisse hydro plant

Hydro-Québec has decided to definitively cease production of electricity at its 15-MW Saint-Narcisse hydropower station, on the Batiscan River in Mauricie, and to dismantle the dam.

The work will begin in the next year and will last six years.

The company interrupted operation of the Saint-Narcisse plant in 2018 after noting significant damage to the facilities. “According to our estimates, the cost of the work required to restore the dam safely and refurbish the power plant would amount to approximately $180 million, for a production capacity limited to 15 megawatts,” explains Roger Gosselin, senior director – planning, strategies and group expertise – innovation, production, health, safety and environment at Hydro-Québec.

“On the other hand, the costs associated with shutting down production and restoring the site are expected to be around $ 30 million. It is therefore judicious to put an end to the production of this power station and to restore the river to its original state. “

Some buildings, which have recognized historical value, will be preserved. Discussions are under way with the community to find the best way to showcase the site.

Electricity generation at Saint-Narcisse began in 1926, some reports say. However, Hydro-Quebec reported previously that the original 480-kW Saint-Narcisse plant began supplying electricity in 1897.
