Utility holding company Dominion seeks proposals for renewable energy projects, including hydro and ocean power, to meet renewables portfolio standards in its Virginia and North Carolina service territories.

Utility holding company Dominion seeks proposals for renewable energy projects, including hydro and ocean power, to meet renewables portfolio standards in its Virginia and North Carolina service territories. Proposals are due Feb. 1, 2008.

Dominion said Nov. 29 it seeks projects in development or in early stages of construction to help meet Virginia’s voluntary goal of 12 percent of electricity sales from renewables by 2022 and North Carolina’s mandatory goal of 12.5 percent from renewables by 2021. (HNN 9/6/07)

The projects must be located in Virginia, North Carolina, or elsewhere in the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) Interconnection area, which would allow the electricity to be transported to distribution utilities Dominion Virginia Power and Dominion North Carolina Power.

In addition to hydro, wave, and tidal power, Dominion said it would consider proposals for wind, solar, sustainable biomass, waste, or geothermal energy projects. It is interested in project ownership interests or the purchase of renewable energy credits.

Dominion already operates about 413 MW of renewable generation from hydro, biomass, and wind projects, including the 324-MW Roanoke Rapids and Gaston hydro project (No. 2009) and the 2,164-MW Bath County Pumped-Storage project (No. 2716).

Earlier this year two other companies doing business in North Carolina issued renewables solicitations including hydro, Progress Energy Carolinas (HNN 11/6/07) and Duke Energy Carolinas LLC. (HNN 4/24/07)

A copy of Dominion’s request for proposals is on the company’s Internet site, www.dom.com. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 1, 2008.
