European energy producer Fortum and industrial operations service provider Maintpartner Finland have signed a three-year contract regarding Fortum’s hydropower plants in the Oulujoki and Imatra regions.

Under the agreement, Fortum’s local operation and maintenance personnel will transfer to Maintpartner as existing employees, effective Dec. 1, 2013.

Fortum said the number of employees transferring to Maintpartner from the Oulujoki and Imatra regions is 34 and 19, respectively, though Fortum will retain some of its own employees to focus on hydropower asset management, stakeholder relations and hydropower investment projects.

“Hydropower is a core business for Fortum,” Vice-President of Renewable Energy Risto Andsten said. “We want to focus our own resources on planning and implementing maintenance and refurbishment investments targeting our plants. This is why we wanted a partner specializing in the daily maintenance of our plants.”

HydroWorld.com reported in July that Fortum had filed a complaint with the European Commission over the Swedish government’s taxes on hydroelectric power.
