Dams and Civil Structures Perspectives: Hydro Fun Taking myself and situations around me too seriously is one (among many!) of the problems I have. hydroreviewcontentdirectors 6.26.2015 Share Tags HR Volume 34 Issue 5 Taking myself and situations around me too seriously is one (among many!) of the problems I have. In my quest for accuracy, quality and organizational thoroughness, I often forget it’s OK to smile, laugh and simply enjoy the moment. (Sound familiar, anyone?!) Recently, two of my colleagues posted blog entries in the “Hydro Talk” section of www.HydroWorld.com that caught my attention: — Hydro Review Managing Editor Elizabeth Ingram wrote a blog titled http://www.hydroworld.com/articles/2015/05/letting-loose-and-having-fun.html “Letting loose and having fun.” — Michael Harris, Hydro Review associate editor, wrote one called http://www.hydroworld.com/articles/2015/04/play-with-your-food-dam-it.html “Play with your food, dam it.” (Check out this blog to see some fun photos!) These clever blog entries got me thinking about fun … Hydro Fun. So, my Perspectives column this month is to share some ways you can have a little fun! Hydro jobs cadence Watch the video — below if you are using our digital version or at http://bit.ly/1BemmhF if you are viewing the print edition — and you can’t help but smile! Hydro jobs search While the video is fun and catchy, we realize employee recruitment and retention are serious subjects. That’s why PennWell’s Hydro Group is offering a feature on HydroWorld.com for employers to post hydro jobs and job seekers to look for new opportunities. Check out the hydro jobs at www.hydroworld.com/index/hydro-jobs.html. Dam ‘selfie’ slide show You know the old saying: “A picture is worth a thousand words”? We’ve taken that to heart and are offering information in photo form — we call them “slide shows.” They are posted on the home page of HydroWorld.com. One fun slide show was called: “Your Picture Here: Send Us Your Dam Selfie.” Hydro professionals from all over the world sent in their self “portraits” in front of dams and hydro projects around the world. Check it out at: www.hydroworld.com/slideshow-archive.html. It’s not too late to send in a selfie — email to: [email protected]. Fun in Portland! As you certainly ascertain from reviewing the pages of this issue of Hydro Review, the industry is gearing up for this year’s annual gathering of the worldwide hydro industry … HydroVision International. Of course, the event will be filled with useful delivery of new and valuable information, displays of available products and services, and important business meetings. In addition, though, HydroVision International offers plenty of opportunity for fun and networking with colleagues. Here’s just a few of the many highlights: — Hydro Geocaching activity — organized by the Foundation for Water and Energy Education — Golf Tournament, complete with awards for selected participants, Heron Lakes golf club — Turbine Runner 5K — a fun run benefiting the Hydro Research Foundation — Dams N’ Roses Networking Party — live music and entertainment, good food and drink — Keep Hydrated Picnic and Beer Tasting — each attendee has the opportunity to vote for their favorite beer from two local breweries Here’s hoping you will join in the Hydro Fun!
