The 11,200-MW Belo Monte hydro project, to be built in Para state, has faced several delays to its construction. A federal judge last week ordered construction to be suspended on the grounds that the necessary environmental provisions had not been met. The Norte Energia consortium, which is developing the project, appealed against the decision. The Belo Monte project, expected to cost more than US$11 billion, is to be built on the Xingu River.
