Canadian utility BC Hydro has extended the deadline for bids to perform site preparation on the north bank of the Peace River for the proposed 1,100-MW Peace River Site C hydroelectric project in British Columbia. Bids now are due Jan. 5, 2015.

BC Hydro previously called for bids by Dec. 10. It also called for bids by Dec. 19 for engineering consulting services to perform equipment health rating assessments of the utility’s hydroelectric facilities in British Columbia.

Environment Canada and the environment and forestry ministers of British Columbia granted final environmental approvals in October to construct Site C. However, a group of four First Nations have filed a lawsuit contending BC Hydro did not adequately consider the project’s impacts on the groups. British Columbia still must make a final investment decision and the province-owned utility must obtain regulatory permits and authorizations.

BC Hydro now seeks proposals to prepare the construction site on the north bank of the Peace River at the location of the proposed dam and project area. Work will be subject to a provincial investment decision to proceed.

Work is to include excavation and disposal of about 3 million cubic meters, quarry development including riprap production of about 100,000 cubic meters, building 7.25 kilometers of access roads, and clearing and grubbing 115 hectares.
