The Tennessee Valley Authority is hosting a two-day celebration to celebrate the 80th birthday 110-MW Norris hydropower plant in east Tennessee.

Norris Dam’s anniversary festivities begin today, July 29, and conclude tomorrow. The public is invited to enjoy free tours of the plant’s powerhouse, an 8K race and two-mile fun walk, educational displays, and food, live music and other family-oriented activities.

Parking for all events will be at the Museum of Appalachia, located in Clinton, Tenn., with shuttles providing transportation to Norris Dam.

Construction on the plant began just months after the TVA was created in 1933 and was completed in 1936, becoming the first TVA-built project to begin operations. The dam impounds the Clinch River, creating Norris Reservoir that TVA calls the backbone of the state’s park system.

The Norris Dam celebration kicks off a year-long recognition of all TVA dams, including those that were planned under the 1936 Unified Development of the Tennessee River System plan.
